Kanzaki Ritsu is our prissy, pissy student that others hold in great respect. He's a member of some sort of committee that enforces rules, I think. |
|
Ootori Shura is a son of a yakuza boss who is forced to go to school in Tokyo (?) and takes a liking to Ritsu. Most people in school are in awe of him. |
|
Toudou-kaichou appears to be a student teacher (not sure about this) at Ritsu and Shura's all-boys school. |
|
Aizawa Yuuki is Shura's ... butler. Or, right-hand man. He trails Shura everywhere (and I do mean everywhere) and cleans up the bodies after Shura beats them up. |
The Story
'Gekka Bijin' opens with a classic 'yamero' scene: Shura is forcing himself on Ritsu, whose arms are behind his back. After much verbal sparring and The Deed, Ritsu wakes up to the sound of Aizawa wringing out a cloth. Ritsu is embarassed and of course, wants Aizawa to get out.
Flashback!
Ritsu is called by another person who wants him to tell a scary student to stop smoking tobacco. That scary student is, naturally, Shura and he knows who Ritsu is. He then refers to Ritsu rather audaciously (he uses Ritsu's first name). The chicken-student is a bit puzzled, and thinks Ritsu knows Shura, but Ritsu has no idea who Shura is.
End result, Ritsu grabs Shura's cigarette and grinds it out. When Ritsu tries to talk to a teacher, he says he can't to anything, because of the Ootori family.
This irritates Ritsu, to say the least.
Going to speed through this a bit more.
After another Forced to do a Deed scene, Ritsu and Shura have another verbal spat. When Shura turns away, Ritsu yells, "Wait! Shura!" This is important, I think, because up until now, Ritsu refers to him as 3 things: 1) kisama 2) yakuza kid 3) evil brat. The usage of his name pleases Shura quite a bit.
Later, Ritsu is attacked by people he thinks are Shura's enemies. He yells for help, and Shura comes to the rescue!
He beats everyone up (nothing severe, because Ritsu stops him), takes Ritsu home, makes sure he's okay, and proceeds to boink him.
And really, that's what this series is about: Ritsu and Shura having conflicts (with each other or with other people), Shura declaring that Ritsu is his, and then boinking each other silly.
There are side stories, such as the introduction of Toudou, who Ritsu liked quite a bit initially. Actually, Toudou and his squeeze geta lot of pages at the end of 'Gekka Tenshi.' Looks like Toudou is a shota-kon perv. Then again, with yaoi, it's hard to tell how old people are.
There is also Arashiyama Midori, who has has a thing for Shura since middle school, where Shura shot him down (date? or attempt to unite their yakuza families?). Thus, he has a massive dislike for Ritsu. Arashiyama has a sidekick, Juumonji Dai (Dai-chan to Arashiayama), who helps carry out Arashiyama's plots. He's a bit long-suffering, and doesn't open his eyes. Ever. Also, refers to Arashiyama as -sama, but everyone else as -han. >XD Accents abound!
And! Aizawa's brothers: Ryuuichi and Ryuuji. How's that for overly similar names?
Commentary
To be honest, I don't think I would have bought this series if I didn't have strange emotional attachments to it. It was the first yaoi comic I had seen! I wanted to get it for that reason. heh.
Ritsu is a pissy person. No way around that. Even when he does get together with Shura, he alternates between weak, pushy, angsty, and pissy. People admire him, and he sprouts roses, but still. He's such an uke.
Shura is just your typical seme who constantly declares his ownership of his uke, and insists on acting on said ownership. I think, though, it's important to note that Shura talks with an accent. Ritsu makes a note of hearing people talking with Shura's accent (I'm sorry, I don't know what it is, just that it involves 'ya'), and once mistakes someone for Shura because of it.
I'm not sure what's the selling factor about this series. I will admit that Shura and Ritsu together is (overly) sweet, but I'm not especially fond of either of them. To be honest, I'm more fond of Aizawa's brother Ryuuji for reasons inexplicable, considering the amount of screen-time he gets.
The stories could be read separately, but there's still a bit of flow between them. Not especially so, but enough for you to know it's going in order.
The art is fine, but not really special. Things tend to be a bit exagerrated, and the people seem a bit cartoony to me.
I think, I'd recommend this series if you want a lot of lemon and a lot of fluff on the side. Mushy fluff.
Random
'Gekka Bijin' is, according to several booksellers I've contacted, out of print. The other 2 books are more recent (1999, 2001) and will be much easier to find.
Also, a random nonrelated story is at the end of vol. 1.
